If somebody asks me "What is your favorite painting?", then I would answer The Starry Night. The Starry Night was painted by Vincent van Gogh, and of course, he is my favorite artist, too.

 

 

After I learned forensic medicine as I was a university student, I had enjoyed reading a book of forensic medicine. I liked reading the book written by Moon Kukjin who was one of the famous forensic pathologist in Korea. Whenever I found his book at the library or a book store, I read it. one day, I found one of his book in a book store, that book was The Secret of Van Gogh's Death. Moon wrote about not only Gogh's suspicious death but also his life and paintings, it might be a good way to search for the cause of his death. Moon always wrote his forensic medical books like this, that's why I liked reading his book.

That book was very interesting for me to know his life, thinking, painting and his achievement. As I read the book, I gradually attracted his painting and his life. I thought van Gogh had a very vulnerable personality and deep generosity. When he lived near a mine, he had found one miner got serious hurts at the mine. Most people said that he would be dead, but van Gogh tried to survive him and took care the miner. Eventually, the miner was survived and cured by van Gogh's care. This story is showing how he was a good person. He might not get blamed by other people if he didn't concerned to the miner's hurts. That's one of the reason I liked him and his painting.

When I read the book, I was so impressed his painting, especially The Starry Night. He had painted about the cypress trees and swirling stars, one people said that the star's shape seemed like the whirlpool galaxy and one people said that the stars were only an optical illusion by poisoning of absinth, because van Gogh always drank by the absinth. Anyway, I liked this painting very much, it had been made me calm down when I got some insomnia.

 

 

I think the artists have had the different ideas than normal people. They gave me the peaceful mind and emotion as The Starry Night. And some paintings and sculptures might give us the creative ideas, future-oriented mind, social criticism and social reform etc. I think it's very important for us to see many kinds of a work of art.
