Everyone goes through ups and downs in terms of mood and energy levels. But when these shifts in behavior and emotion become so extreme that they affect a person's ability to function normally, the condition may be considered bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depresseve illness―a serious disorder requiring lifelong care.
Bipolar disorder generally develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, but symptoms are sometimes experienced as early as childhood. The disorder affects about 5.7 million American adults, or about 2.6 percent of the population ages 18 and older. The condition is often overlooked or misdiagnosed as regular depression, and people can go for years without proper treatment.
Dramatic mood swings are the hallmark symptoms of bipolar disorder: People experience "high" periods―known as manic episodes―that last for a week or longer in which they feel extremely energetic, creative, and invincible. During these episodes, they may go for days without sleeping, make risky sexual decisions, abuse drugs, and spend money wildly.
These phases are countered by periods of extreme depression, irritability, anxiety, and hopelessness. Depressive episodes last for 5 days or longer and can include chronic pain, unintended weight loss or gain, and thoughts of death or suicide.
For most people with bipolar disorder, there are breaks between the episodes. But a small percentage of people with the condition experience unremitting symptoms all the time in what's known as rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.
Without treatment, bipolar disorder tends to worsen over time. In most cases, mood-stabilizing medication and talk therapy can help control symptoms and allow patients to lead normal, productive lives.
Children with bipolar disorder (an increasingly common diagnosis) often experience very fast mood swings between mania and depression, several times within a day. Children whose parents have bipolar disorder are more likely to develop the disease.
The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but it is believed to be linked to genetics. But genetics alone are not thought to cause the disorder, and an identical twin may develop bipolar disorder while his or her sibling does not.
People with bipolar disorder often suffer from related conditions as well, such as abnormal thyroid function, ongoing anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
