Congenital Heart Disease (선천성 심장 질환)

In 1 in 100 births, an infant is born with a defect or malformation of the heart, called congenital heart disease. This birth defect needs to be carefully monitored : Some cases require surgery, while others eventually heal on their own.

 

의사들은 보통 심장박동을 들을 때 졸졸거리는 혹은 특이한 소리를 감지하여 선천성 심장 질환을 먼저 찾아낸다. 심초음파, 흉부 X 선 검사, 심장 MRI 검사와 같은 다른 검사가 진단을 내리는데 사용되어진다. 그러나 어떤 형태의 선천성 심장질환은 어떤 증상도 나타내지 않기 때문에 많은 경우들은 성인기까지 잘 감지되지 않기도 한다.

 

One of the most common types of congenital heart disease is a septal defect, or a hole in the partition between the right and left atria or ventricles of the heart. Other types of disorders are heart valve problems, such as mitral, tricuspid, pulmonic, or aortic stenosis. These occur when one of the valves narrows, blocking the flow of blood into or through the heart, depriving the body or lungs of adequate bloodflow, and stressing the heart muscle. Yet another type of disorder is the transposition, or switching, of the aorta and the pulmonary artery, reducing the amount of oxygenated blood that reaches the tissues.

 

전문가들은 무엇이 정확히 선천성 심장 결함을 이끄는지 확신하진 않지만, 연구에 의하면 다운 증후군과 같은 유전적인 장애를 갖고 있는 신생아들에 위험성이 증가된다는 걸 보여준다. 엄마가 특정처방약물을 복용하거나 혹은 임신초기에 약물이나 술을 남용하거나 혹은 임신 첫 3분기동안 풍진과 같은 바이러스 감염에 침범당하거나 하면, 아기들이 또한 심장 결함을 갖게 될 경우가 많다. 선천성 심장 질환에 대한 치료법은 결함의 형태와 심각성에 의해 좌우되는데 약물 처방이나 수술요법 등을 포함한다. 만약 치료되지 않은 채로 냅두면, 선천성 심장질환은 고혈압, 심장 감염 그리고 심지어는 심부전으로 이어진다.

 

 

 

 

In the 1970s, nearly one in three surgeries to repair congenital heart defects ended in death. But, thanks to medical advances, deaths have dropped to only 5 percent.

 

Heart defects that lead to oxygen deprivation in the blood are called cyanotic, a word derived from the Greek word for "blue". When a heart defect shunts blood away from the lungs, oxygen deprivation in the blood can tint skin a blue color.

 

Babies with cyanotic heart disease used to be called blue babies.
