Maybe your child took a spill during a bike ride or bumped into a table while running around the living room. For whatever reason, there's an ugly black-and-blue mark on her leg. These common injuries occur when the connective tissue and muscle are damaged. Blood from small vessels called capillaries leaks out and pools beneath the skin, forming a burise. It's probably the most common childhood injury, but we seldom stop to ask why it goes through all those changes.
As the body reabsorbs the blood, the bruise changes colors accordingly. At first, it appears reddish as the blood gathers, but as the iron-containing blood substance hemoglobin breaks down, the mark becomes blue or purplish black. As the blood continues to disintegrate, a green pigment called biliverdin forms after about a week, marking the skin appear green or yellow. Eventually, the bruise completely fades away, usually in about 2 weeks.
How easily you bruise depends on a variety of factors. Some people have more delicate tissue that others, leaving them more vulnerable. Children have thinner skin that adults and are more likely to bruise because they are more active. Certain medications, such as blood thinners and aspirin, also lead to bruising, and older people are at an increased risk because capillary walls weaken with age and break more easily. Low blood platelet levels and certain diseases, such as Cushing's syndrome, may predispose a person toward bruising.
To slow bloodflow to the area and speed healing, apply an ice or cold pack to the injured area as soon as a bruise begins to form. You can also elevate the bruised area in order to slow the influx of blood. But if your child suddenly experiences large or painful bruises for no known reason, or black-and-blue marks are accompanied by abnormal bleeding easewhere, such as from the nose or gums, consult a physician. These symptoms may signal a more serious issue, such as a blood-related disease or blood clotting problem.
Black-and-blue marks are also known as contusions or ecchymoses. The term ecchymosis comes from the Greek words ekchymousthai ("to pour out") and chymos ("juice")
There are three types of bruises : The most common, subcutaneous, occur directly beneath the skin. Intramuscular bruises happen in the underlying muscle, while periosteal ones occur on the bones.
