2장 관세음보살의 화현을 묻다.

Chapter 2. Asking the incarnation of Kwan-Sae-Eum Bodhisattva.

 

 

1. 무진의보살이 부처님께 여쭈었다.

 『세존이시여, 관세음보살은 어떻게 이 사바세계에서 노니시며, 어떻게 중생을 위하여 설법하시며, 방편의 힘으로 하시는 그 일은 어떠하나이까.』

1. Moo-Jin-Ui asked to Buddha.

『Oh Sae-Jon, how does Kwan-Sae-Eum Bodhisattva goes around this ㉠saba world, how does she sermon for sattvas and  how does she work with the power of convenience(?).』

 

 

 

2. 부처님께서 무진의보살에게 말씀하시었다.

 『선남자야, 만일 어떤 국토의 중생을 부처님의 몸으로 제도할 이에게는 관세음보살이 곧 부처님의 몸을 나타내어 법을 설하고, 벽지불의 몸으로 제도할 이에게는 곧 벽지불의 몸을 나타내어 법을 설하고, 성문의 몸으로 제도할 이에게는 곧 성문의 몸을 나타내어 법을 설해주느니라.』

2. Budha said to Moo-Jin-Ui Bodhisattva.

『Good man, if there are sattivas in one land should be saved by an appearance of budha, Kwan-Sae-Eum Bodhaisattva soon shows her as an appearance of budha, then she preaches, and if someone should be saved by an appearance of a ㉡pratyekabuddha then she shows her as an appearance of a pratyekabuddha, then she preaches, and if someone should be saved by an appearance of a Śrāvaka then she shows her as an appearance of Śrāvaka, then she preaches.』

 

 

 

㉠saba : The mundane world, or the sea of suffering, which, contrary to the Pure Land in the West, must be endured.

 

㉡A pratyekabuddha or paccekabuddha (Sanskrit and Pali, respectively), literally "a lone buddha", "a buddha on their own" or "a private buddha", is one of three types of enlightened beings according to some schools of Buddhism. The other two buddha types are the arhat and the sammāsambuddha (Sanskrit samyaksambuddha).

 

㉢Śrāvaka (Sanskrit) or Sāvaka (Pali) means "hearer" or, more generally, "disciple". This term is used in Buddhism and Jainism. In Jainism, a śrāvaka is any lay Jain so the term śrāvaka has been used for the Jain community itself (for example see Sarak and Sarawagi).
